Animals at Essex Breeding Centre are fed a bespoke pelleted diet which is supplemented with seeds and wheatgerm.  The supplemented feed is scatter fed to encourage foraging to enrich the environment.

Our Guinea pigs are housed in large pens with freeze dried hay and grass which has been tested against ringworm. Our animals get used to people from the moment they are born, fed dry diet supplemented with cabbage, broccoli, carrots and apples and must reach at least 300g before being weaned and delivered to you.

Our Syrian hamsters are weaned and delivered at around 5 weeks of age and minimum weight 45g.

Gerbils can make excellent pets. They can be very active, with great personalities. If raised and handled properly they’ll be your friends for life. They are social animals and enjoy living in same sex pairs or small groups.

Guinea Pigs

Guinea pigs are social animals. In the wild they live in close family groups of 5 – 10 individuals, though several groups may live in close proximity to form a colony. Guinea pigs are small, social, “chatty” rodents that typically live for 5-6 years, but some may live longer. They are happiest kept with their own species as a same sex pair or trio.

Syrian Hamsters

Syrian hamsters are very popular pets.  They are naturally solitary so it is recommended that they are housed singly for their adult life.  If handled regularly they make great pets.

Dwarf Hamsters

We breed 3 species of Dwarf hamster at EBC; Russian, Chinese and Roborovskii.  They have gained in popularity partly because they are social animals that enjoy living in same sex pairs or trios.

Fancy Rats & Mice

Our fancy rats make great pets. They are intelligent and love to interact.  As social animals they enjoy company and are best kept in same sex pairs or trios.

Fancy mice are gaining in popularity as pets due to their social, friendly and active nature.  They are best kept together in same sex pairs or small groups.
